Surely one of their best b sides Should have been on the Tax is the eighth album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD, released in May 1991 on Virgin Records. It was the group's first studio album since 1986, and the first of three recorded without co-founder Paul Humphreys, who had departed in 1989. Featuring singer Andy McCluskey with a new backing band, it leans more towards the dance-pop genre that was prevalent in the early 1990s, than the experimental brand of synthpop which characterised OMD's earlier recordings. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark OMD Format: Audio CD. 1991's SUGAR TAX was the first new album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark since 1986's THE PACIFIC AGE. Much had changed in the intervening five years. Most obviously, co-founder Paul Humphreys had left the band, leaving singerkeyboardist Andy McCluskey the sole constant member. Surprisingly, SUGAR TAX sounds remarkably like earlier OMD albums, leadingone to wonder how important Humphrey's role in the band hadactually been. Album: Sugartax. The earliest recordings, 1980's Electricity and Messages, prove electric messages were being channeled from such German pioneers as Kraftwerk and Neu These English boys were enamored of melody, though, and it was not long before such dulcet, song-like structure became self-evident, as in 1984's Tesla Girls. The Best of OMD is a compilation album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, released in 1988 marking a decade since the band's beginnings. The record essentially delineates the group's experimental early years from their pop-oriented later work: side one features recordings from 19791984, while side two is drawn from the group's 19841988 efforts. It was a worldwide success, becoming a Top 5 hit across Europe and achieving 3x platinum sales in the United Kingdom and gold status in the United States
