Will Hermes. With blowsy, parched vocals, languorous tempos, straggly melodies and flyaway guitar lines, Lucinda Williams 12th album feels a little like an alt-country picture of Dorian Gray. You could also call it a portrait of the artist as an older woman: time-scarred, unapologetic, but still potent. Yeah, its literary yeah, its the polar opposite of cosmetic-surgery pop. As such, its not for everyone. But its jazzy rawness represents a high point of emotional craft in a career defined by it. producing enough quality material to follow last years double-album Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone with another double-album of equivalent potency. The songs on The Ghosts of Highway 20 have the unerring ring of truth about them, shining glimmers of light into dark and unpalatable corners of life. Read full review. Ghosts of Highway 20 deals with struggle, like the struggle against depression in Dust , or the struggle against our own limits in Doors of Heaven , or the struggle against our past failures in Ghosts of Highway 20. Williams prays to God in If Theres a Heaven and Faith & Grace and the emotion is real. Her vocals are excellent conveying emotion in her own unique style, but with as much class as any from Patsy Cline. This album, coming on the heels of her 2014 release, makes you think Williams may have hit her stride and entered the most productive period of her career. The Ghosts of Highway 20 Q&A. The thread of Highway 20 connects those songs, mirroring the winding route of the road itself, a street that cleaves close to Williams childhood homes, the final resting place of her mother, the sites where signposts of her formative years are forever planted. To my mind 'The Ghosts of Highway 20' should be regarded as Lucinda's best album to date. The languorous sound of her voice, together with the rythmic reverberative guitars adds depth to the disconsolate lyrics that is both heartbreaking and yet strangely consoling. Definitely a masterpiece. SPIN Rating: 8 of 10 Release Date: February 05, 2016 Label: Highway 20, Thirty Tigers. Give Lucinda Williams new album The Ghosts of Highway 20 even a cursory listen and its quickly apparent the veteran songwriter has death on her mind. With its first few guitar harmonics ringing like church bells, album opener Dust sets the mortality-stricken tone for the record with the refrain even your thoughts are dust, a line Williams borrowed from her father Miller Williams, an Arkansas-born poet best known for writing Bill Clintons second-term inaugural poem who succumbed to Alzheimers in
