This is probably the last album on earth people would discuss when it comes to the pros and cons of mastering. I don't expect to see a thread about this CD on some audiophile forum. And I doubt anyone will ever read these comments, but I promise I won't cry. This is actually a very good album and you should experience it just as Johansson and company did when they recorded and mixed it back in 1968. It's very well recorded, too. Swedish Radio definitely knew what they were doing. If you want to hear this music in the best possible way, find an old CD and avoid the "digitally remixed" version from 2006. You'll lose out on the four bonus tracks, but they're probably available "elsewhere" if you care to look. The original recording was mixed in pretty wide stereo. This remix has a much more narrow stereo image. I understand their thinking, trying to make it more "accessible" to "modern ears", but I prefer the original mix which is superb as is. The bass and treble has been boosted somewhat, beefing up the sound to an unnecessary degree in some songs. And naturally there's that dreaded digital noise reduction, because, you know, tape hiss is a terrible sin. Listening to the quieter numbers is a bit depressing, as the noise reduction sucks the life out of Johansson's piano. In the words of the genius that is Donald Trump: "Sad!". The result of this modern tinkering ranges from downright awful to decent (and, in one case, they actually managed to improve the original mix!).Regards, the person without a life
I'm looking about for an LP of his and think I'll go for this one on vinyl as it is still nice and cheap.Thank you. The (other) person without a life
