Paul Dennis Miller born September 6, 1970, known professionally as DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid, is an American electronic and experimental hip hop musician whose work is often called by critics illbient or trip hop. He is a turntablist, record producer, philosopher, and author. That same year saw the release of Optometry, a collaboration with avant-jazz players Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Guillermo E. Brown and Joe McPhee. In a classical vein, he collaborated with the ST-X Ensemble in performances of the music of Iannis Xenakis. The concert and album were released as an enhanced CD containing both a full audio program and multimedia computer files. Art Direction Matthew Shipp. Bass William Parker. More than any other turntablist in trip-hop or beyond, Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid places himself within a distinct avant-garde lineage-that of Morton Feldman, Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage. Optometry, his first putative jazz recording, attempts to lasso another form of avant-gardism-the comprovisational realm of the post-60s new thing. His collaborators in this cause could hardly be more apt pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker and drummer Guillermo E. Brown have all employed electronics on recent recordings both as solo artists and together, with David S. Shipp and Spooky created and released the atmospheric album Optometry in 2002, with the help of jazz players William Parker, Guillermo Barreto Brown, Medeski, Martin & Wood's Billy Martin, Joe McPhee, Carl Hancock Rux, and a flurry of others. Spooky calls Optometry jazz for the genre splice generation. It is this album that provides the grist for Spooky's current release: Dubtometry. As the name implies, the album is something of a remix of Optometry with a little bit of dub thrown in. As it so happens, the name is misleading since the amount of dub present is almost
