Формируйте собственную коллекцию записей Utterance is the debut album of the progressive folk band Comus. It was released in 1971, with the opening song Diana being released as a single. First Utterance was notable for its unique blend of progressive rock, folk, psychedelia, and elements of paganism and the macabre. The overall thematic tone of the album is of vulnerable innocence facing abusive power, with songs dealing with such themes as violence Drip Drip, rape Diana, Song to Comus, and criticism surrounding. Comus' first album contains an imaginative if elusive brand of experimental folk-rock, with a tense and sometimes distressed vibe. Although there are elements of traditional British folk music, there's an edginess to the songwriting and arrangements that would be entirely alien in a Fairport Convention or Pentangle disc. At times, this straddles the border between folk-rock and the kind of songs you'd expect to be sung at a witches' brew fest, the haunting supernatural atmosphere enhanced by bursts of what sound like a theramin-like violin, hand drums, flute, oboe, ghostly. Comus - First Utterance review: A twisted, scary & bizarre mix of folk, prog and psychedelia. Very experimental and ahead of its time. First Utterance is hard to compare to anything else really. There is some influence that can be heard in the unsettling atmosphere of Current 93's style of 'apocalyptic folk', but the only album that really sounds remotely similar is Spirogyra's St. Radigunds which was released in the same year, though that is not quite as experimental and is not nearly the same quality. sound quality is crap on this record. sounds about as warm as a youtube video.

There appears to be a defect on the first song Diana, the song skips three times in the first 15 seconds or so. The vinyl spins smoothly so is definitely the recording. Has anyone else noticed this?
spacebreeze
Yes, I noticed it too, thought my stylus had jumped. the Earmark one is poor quality.
Tojahn
Yeah, same problem with my copy, but with even more skips throughout the song. A bit sad, the reissue is perfect in every other aspect. Kinda keeps me from listening to it at all. I usually put on the CD version instead.
