Album
Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs is the third album of Andrew Bird's career post-Bowl of Fire, released in 2005, following his Weather Systems in 2003. The album art, along with track illustrations in the accompanying booklet were drawn by Jay Ryan. Bird expanded on his earlier work on Weather Systems the song Skin Is, My is an outgrowth of his earlier song Skin. Andrew Bird established himself as an expert within the retro-swing movement in the mid- to late-'90s with both his debut album, Thrills, and its follow-up, Oh The Grandeur but when he released Swimming Hour, it was almost to say, Oh what a fool I've been, backing myself into this retro-swing corner. Andrew Bird is an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, whistler and songwriter who picked up his first violin at the age of four and spent his formative years soaking up classical repertoire completely by ear. As a teen Bird became interested in a variety of styles including early jazz, country blues and folk music, synthesizing them into his unique brand of pop. Andrew Birds vocals, all drowsy and blue, live inside arrangements that unfold like landscapes in miniature they somehow manage to be both vast and tiny. Amid crying violins, fluttering whistles and twinkly percussion, Birds cryptic wordplay worms its way deep into your consciousness. Chamber pop, indie folk, baroque pop-however you want to label The Mysterious Production of Eggs, it's undeniably gorgeous. Andrew Bird's latest retains his sense of songcraft but eschews straightforward storytelling, opting instead for wordplay and imagery. This album begins with Andrew Bird referencing Wagner's epochal Ride of the Valkyries it ends with a narrator asking someone to sing him Happy Birthday like it's gonna be your last day on earth. I picked up Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs after reading Zebra's inimitable review, originally assuming that the Mysterious Production of Eggs was the best-named backing band in history rather than a puzzling album title. A former revival swing participant, Bird collaborated with the Squirrel Nut Zippers in his earliest days as a recording artist. This is probably the biggest weakness of the album - if overplayed, each song becomes indistinguishable from the next and the need for something more palpable dawns.
